1. What is a 17-Digit VIN?
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is your automobile's unique biometric fingerprint. Under global ISO 3779 standards, every vehicle manufactured in India has a 17-character alphanumeric code that reveals the country of origin, manufacturer, vehicle model, assembly plant, and exact year and month of manufacture.
2. Where to Locate the Physical VIN on the Car
Dealers print VIN numbers on paper delivery slips, but you must verify the metal-stamped chassis engraving directly on the car:
- Driver-Side Seat Base: Under a cut-out carpet flap beneath the driver or co-driver seat rail.
- Windshield Bottom Corner: Visible from the outside bottom corner of the front windscreen.
- Engine Bay Firewall / Strut Tower: Stamped into the heavy metal firewall behind the engine block.
- B-Pillar VIN Plate: Riveted aluminum compliance plate on the driver door jamb.
3. Decoding Manufacturing Year & Month
In most Indian cars (Maruti, Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia):
- 10th Character represents the Year: (e.g., 'R' = 2024, 'S' = 2025, 'T' = 2026).
- Letter Codes for Month: 'A' = January, 'B' = February, 'C' = March ... 'M' = December (skipping 'I' to avoid confusion with the number 1).
If you are buying a car in October 2026, the vehicle should ideally have been assembled between August and October 2026. A car manufactured 6+ months earlier indicates an old stockyard vehicle that has been baking under rain and sun.
4. How to Read Tyre DOT Manufacturing Codes
Look for a 4-digit code stamped inside an oval on the tyre sidewall (e.g. 3826):
- First 2 digits = Week of the year: 38th week (September).
- Last 2 digits = Year: 2026.
All 4 tyres should have matching or adjacent week numbers that align with the chassis assembly date.
